About me

I’m Hugh Murphy.

Storytelling has become the focus of my creative life, whether through documentary film, curating exhibitions, or working with artists and communities across Galway.

After spending almost 30 years running a commercial printing business with my wife, I decided to take a different path and returned to education as an adult learner. What began as a way of exploring art and design grew into a journey that led to a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Art from ATU and an MA in Curating and Production from the University of Galway.

Although I originally planned to concentrate on painting and printmaking, I soon discovered a passion for film. A documentary project created during my degree opened up a whole new way of working and communicating ideas. Since then, I have produced a range of documentaries that celebrate Galway’s people, places, artists, and communities. I enjoy uncovering stories that might otherwise go untold and creating films that capture the character and spirit of the city I now call home.

Curating has become another important part of my work. Over the past number of years, I have organised and curated exhibitions throughout Galway City, Kinvara, and Oughterard, bringing together artists, photographers, and community groups to share their work with wider audiences. I particularly enjoy creating opportunities for people to connect through art, conversation, and shared experiences.

My background in printing, visual art, filmmaking, and curation has given me a broad creative perspective, but at the heart of everything I do is a simple interest in people and their stories.

When I'm not working on a film or exhibition, I continue to support local arts organisations and festivals, helping to promote the vibrant creative community that makes Galway such a special place to live and work.

Thank you for visiting. I hope you enjoy exploring my work.
